4 Tips for Easing the Transition to University Life

The first few weeks at university can be nerve racking. After all, your whole life has changed: you’re living in a new city, surrounded by strangers and with far more responsibilities than you’ve ever had before. Although it may take some time, you will learn to adjust to university life — and there are a few things you can do to make the transition easier.

1. Stay Physically Healthy

When you start university, it’s up to you to choose to lead a healthy lifestyle. You’ll need to be disciplined to ensure you stick to a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and sleep enough every night.

2. Focus on Your Wellbeing

Know what you need to feel good mentally and emotionally at university. You may feel homesick when you first arrive, or difficult classes could cause you stress. Prevent these from developing into problems by focusing on your wellbeing. Reach out to family and friends back home and try to make new friends to build a support system at university.

If you’re sharing an apartment, put in the effort to get to know your roommates. It’s great if you can become friends, but this is not always possible. At a minimum, though, it’s important that you are all comfortable living together to avoid disputes that could make your living situation tense.

Finally, work on your organizational skills. You’ll feel better if you arrive to all your classes on time, you’re never rushing to finish a paper right before the due date, and you always remember your appointments.

3. Take Advantage of Campus Resources

Your university will definitely have resources on campus to help you with any problems you’re unable to solve on your own. For instance, advisors can help you navigate every step of your journey through university, including receiving financial aid, choosing the right classes, and meeting your academic goals. If you have a mental health condition or just need someone to talk to, you can also receive counselling from a professional.

Other great resources are student organizations. These include clubs, sports teams, and opportunities to volunteer. All are ideal for meeting people who share the same interests as you and for discovering new passions.

4. Don’t Worry About What’s to Come

The university experience means you’ll be constantly facing new challenges — but you should deal with them as they come. Right now, just focus on getting through each day in turn. Think about what you need to do today to prepare for your next classes, progress with your assignments, and find the confidence to attend an extracurricular or social event. Keep your long-term goals in mind, but don’t allow them to make you feel overwhelmed.
