Comprehensive Student Apartment Packing List
To be able to live independently, you’ll need to bring many things to your student apartment. Some of these you may already own, whereas there are others you’ll need to purchase — either in advance or after you arrive. To avoid forgetting anything essential, it’s worth writing a packing list. Make sure you include all the following.
1. Cleaning Products
It’s important to have some cleaning products as soon as you move in. Equipping your apartment with at least the basics will mean you’re able to keep your living space tidy and can clean up any spills or accidents that happen. An all-purpose cleaner is suitable for most cleaning tasks — and don’t forget to also bring a few cloths and sponges. You’ll need trash bags almost immediately (as unpacking will likely produce some trash) and you should bring a vacuum or broom to clean up after you’ve carried all your belongings inside. Finally, make sure you have essentials like a toilet brush, paper towels, and a duster.
2. Toiletries
Think about what toiletries you use on a regular basis. If you want specific brands, it’s worth bringing these products with you. As well as the obvious toiletries like shampoo, toothpaste, and body wash, don’t forget hand soap, toilet paper, and tissues. Other things you’ll need for the bathroom include a shower curtain, towels, and a hair dryer.
3. Emergency Supplies
Every university student should have a basic first aid kit at home. You can purchase one containing everything you need from any drugstore. In addition, whereas the maintenance team will be available to make any necessary repairs to your apartment, it may also be worth having your own small toolkit with some screwdrivers to fix your own possessions. Lastly, make up a sewing kit with a few needles and different colours of thread for the eventuality that you need to fix a hole in a piece of clothing or sew on a button.
4. Items for Your Bedroom
Consider what you need to keep your bedroom comfortable and functional. Find out the size of your bed to purchase the right size bedding and to ensure you bring sufficient pillows. When packing your clothing, make sure you bring enough hangers. Also consider where you’ll keep your shoes — a clothing bin or a shoe rack are both good options.
5. Things for the Living Room
If you’ll be sharing an apartment with other students, you’ll need to coordinate how you’ll decorate the living room. For instance, one of you could bring an area rug, pillows for the couch, and another a throw blanket.
6. Dishes and Utensils
You’ll save money and eat a more balanced diet if you cook many of your own meals, but this means having all the equipment you need in your kitchen. You should be able to manage with just a couple pots and pans, simple utensils like spoons, spatulas, and a can opener, a set of silverware, and a cutting board. In terms of dishes, you’ll most likely need a few mugs, glasses, bowls, and plates.
