5 Tips for Preparing to Leave Home for University

Moving away from university is a big deal, and it’s normal for it to feel overwhelming. To make the transition as smooth as possible, start preparing to leave home as soon as the summer break begins with these tips.

1. Enjoy Yourself

Summer is the most enjoyable time of year when you’re a student. Remember to have fun and don’t spend all your time thinking about the major life change that’s just around the corner. Spend time with friends who will be attending different universities and with your family members. Go to your favourite hangout spots and do all the activities you enjoy the most. This will help you relax and remove some of your anxiety about leaving.

2. Make Some Lists

Start a few lists for the things you need to do, buy, and pack. Every time you think of something else, add it to the list. This should prevent you from forgetting anything important and give you plenty of time to prepare everything. It should also help you to avoid buying things you don’t need and save money for the things you do need. Every time you purchase something or complete a task, remember to check the item off your list.

3. Go Shopping

Whenever you have some free time, organize a shopping trip or search online for the things you need for university. It often helps to start early to avoid a rush right before you leave home. However, it is worth staying alert for upcoming sales on the most expensive items and thinking about what you can buy when you arrive at university to reduce the amount you need to transport.

4. Start Filling Out Your Planner

To succeed at university, you’ll need to be organized. Unlike at high school, no one will be checking that you’re up to date with your readings, you’re on track to hand in your papers on time, and you attend all your classes — it’s all up to you. Many students find time management particularly challenging when they start university, particularly the need to balance academics with fun.

Having a planner can be a huge help. Purchase one now and start filling it with important dates, appointments, and other responsibilities. Getting into the habit of using a planner will make it easier for you to stay on track when you start university.

5. Read in Preparation for Your Classes

Do some reading to prepare for the classes you’ll be taking — you’ll feel more confident if you’re familiar with the kind of material you’re going to cover. Plus, reading on a regular basis will prepare you for your study schedule at university.
